Walmart Foundation Presents Grant to East Tennessee Foundation for Sevier County Community Fund Disaster Relief and Recovery

Sevier County, TN – A check in the amount of $200,000.00 was presented to the Sevier County Community Fund, an affiliate fund of East Tennessee Foundation on January 9, 2017.  This donation represents the fulfillment of the $250,000 commitment made by Walmart and the Walmart Foundation in response to the wildfire and was presented by local Walmart associates at store #578.  Immediate action was taken by State Senator Doug Overbey (R-Maryville), Boyce Smith, E-Commerce Manager, Walmart and Lee Siler, Senior Manager, Global Disaster Response and Preparedness, Wal-Mart to initiate a grant request for those in need in Sevier County.

“I am extremely proud to be a Walmart associate,” says Walmart Market Manager Melissa Ownby. “Our community has given so much to each of us as business partners and citizens of Sevier County.  It is very exciting and fulfilling to see the Walmart Foundation give back to our community in this fashion.”

The Sevier County Community Fund was identified as the recipient after local Walmart leadership consulted Mountain Tough.  Mountain Tough is an initiative formed by a diverse group of community leaders, organizations, and volunteers coming together with one singular vision -  to assist Sevier County in the short-term relief efforts and the long-term recovery.  Visit mountaintough.org for further details.

Approximately one-half of the dollars awarded will be used to address immediate, transitional, and long-term housing needs.  The remainder may be used to assist local small businesses with reopening and rehiring their former employees as well as re-equipping volunteer fire departments and first responder organizations.

Melissa Ownby, Market Manager - Walmart, Scott Nickens, Store Manager - Walmart, Cory Cottongim, Old Smoky Distillery, Mike McClamroch, CEO/President - East Tennessee Foundation, Trudy Hughes, Director of Regional Advancement - East Tennessee Foundation, and Daniel Crisp, Intern -  East Tennessee Foundation joined the Walmart Store #0578 employees for the check presentation.  The Walmart employees pictured, along with many others, have been volunteering their time in the Sevier County community.
