East Tennessee Foundation Awards $30,000 in Support of Local Neighborhood Organizations

ETF, with the support of Mayor Bill Haslam and in partnership with the City of Knoxville Community Development Department, announces the recipients of the 2010 Neighborhoods Small Grants Program
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - East Tennessee Foundation, with the support of Mayor Bill Haslam and in partnership with the City of Knoxville Community Development Department, announces the recipients of the 2010 Neighborhoods Small Grants Program (NSGP). Fifteen low-to-moderate income neighborhoods located in Knoxville are being awarded with grants totaling $30,000 to support projects which aid in strengthening their communities.
The 2010 recipients are resident-run neighborhood organizations and crime watch groups that have developed and executed their own solutions and responses to neighborhood issues, opportunities and problems. Funded projects will result in stronger neighborhoods and increase the capacity of neighborhood organizations to implement successful projects, as neighborhood residents work together for common purposes.
Grants from the Neighborhoods Small Grants Program have been awarded to benefit the following neighborhood organizations: Alice Bell Spring Hill Neighborhood Association, Cagle Terrace Residents Association, Colonial Village Neighborhood Association, Dandridge Avenue Neighborhood Watch, Fountain City Town Hall, Inc., Fourth and Gill Neighborhood Association, Isabella Towers Residents Association, Lee Williams Tenant Association, Lyons View Community Group, Mechanicsville Community Association, Northgate Terrace Resident Association, Oakwood-Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association, Old North Knoxville, Inc., Old Sevier Community Group, and South Haven Neighborhood Association. Projects supported range from creating community gardens and producing neighborhood newsletters to organizing annual community celebrations. The Neighborhoods Small Grants Program, managed through East Tennessee Foundation, was founded in 1991 from a challenge grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. Since its establishment, the program has awarded over $460,000 to local neighborhoods. The program is made possible with funding support from Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Knoxville City Council.

Funding is awarded to support the second annual Community Day event, and projects which will improve communications among neighborhood residents.
2. Cagle Terrace Residents Association $1,400
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to develop flower and vegetable gardens.
3. Colonial Village Neighborhood Association $1,000
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is requested to support the design, construction, and installation of a neighborhood sign at the corner of Chapman Highway and Mayflower Road.
4. Dandridge Avenue Neighborhood Watch $3,000
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to support the Odd Fellows Scholars Program, which was developed to elevate the academic, social, and technical skills of the youth residing in the Walter P. Taylor Homes and surrounding areas.
5. Fountain City Town Hall $1,000

Funding is awarded to support the annual Honor Fountain City Day event in 2011.
6. Fourth and Gill Neighborhood Association $800
Funding is awarded to support the maintenance of seven flower beds that were created in the mid- 1990's.
7. Isabella Towers Resident Association $2,000
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to produce newsletters for and by residents of Isabella Towers, and enhance the existing landscaping.
8. Lee Williams Tenant Association $1,300
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to support one-or-two health awareness events, with a goal of increasing residents' knowledge about health issues and resources in their community.
9. Lyons View Community Group (Lyons View) $3,000
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to support on-going restoration of the community center, and to record and preserve Lyons View's history.
10. Mechanicsville Community Association $3,000
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to support the fourth annual Homecoming event, which brings community members together and builds neighborhood pride.
11. Northgate Terrace Resident Association $3,000
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to support improvements to gardens in the lobby and back patio areas of Northgate Terrace.
12. Oakwood-Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association $2,780
Funding is awarded to support National Night Out activities, and a communications program.
13. Old North Knoxville, Inc. (ONK) $800
Funding is awarded to support a Community Orchard Tree Project, in collaboration with the Knoxville Tree Board.
14. Old Sevier Community Group $2,420
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to by support improved neighborhood communications, through creation and distribution of a brochure and quarterly newsletters, and placement of meeting announcement signs.
15. South Haven Neighborhood Association $1,500
Fiscal Sponsor: East Tennessee Community Design Center
Funding is awarded to support the design and installation of a neighborhood sign and the publication of a quarterly newsletter.
