Knoxville, TN - In 2011, East Tennessee Foundation (ETF) is celebrating 25 years of thoughtful giving - Neighbors Caring for Neighbors. To mark the occasion and to demonstrate what the Foundation does in our 25-county service area, ETF has awarded 25/$2,500 grants (one grant to a nonprofit in each of the 25 counties we serve) and one $25,000 ETF recognition endowment to an outstanding nonprofit within our service area. Linda Caldwell, Executive Director of Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association, accepted the $25,000 endowment certificate from Terry Holley, ETF Senior Vice President for Programs and Regional Development. The presentation took place Sunday evening as part of the 25th Anniversary celebration fundraiser for the Foundation's Opportunity Fund.
The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association began in 1990 when the southeastern Tennessee counties of McMinn, Monroe, and Polk were selected as a pilot area for the National Trust for Historic Preservation's "Heritage Tourism Initiative." A diverse group of people, organizations, and government agencies serving the three counties came together to build a different kind of tourism program, one that honored local history, traditions, culture, and natural resources. The name "Overhill" was selected to honor our earliest residents, the Overhill Cherokees.
East Tennessee Foundation began its partnership with "the Overhill" in that same year and today ETF and the "Overhill" remain partners with both supporting the preservation of our heritage and cultural tourism. Among the Overhill's numerous accomplishments was the assistance it offered to help establish the Community Action Group of Englewood and the Coker Creek Heritage Group. Both organizations, by the way, are also 25th Anniversary grant recipients.
The overall objective of our 25th Anniversary Celebration has been to bring greater awareness and understanding throughout East Tennessee of how ETF works with nonprofits and donors in the region and how each person in our service area can have a relationship with the Foundation.
