More than $46,000 Awarded to Monroe County Organizations & Initiatives

2011 John D. Grubb & Louise G. Sumner Fund for Monroe County grant recipients announced

East Tennessee - East Tennessee Foundation (ETF) announces its 2011 John D. Grubb & Louise G. Sumner Fund for Monroe County grant recipients. Fourteen grants totaling $46,350 were awarded to 13 nonprofit organizations.

The 13 recipient organizations are: Boys and Girls Club of the Monroe Area; CASA Monroe; City of Sweetwater; Coker Creek Economic Development Group, Inc.; Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Inc. (2 grants); Good Shepherd Center; Monroe Area Council for the Arts; Monroe County Community Health Access Committee; Sequoyah Birthplace Museum; Spay/Neuter Assistance for Pets, Inc.; Sweetwater Home for Seniors; VSA Tennessee; and Women's Wellness and Maternity Center. The funded projects meet the program guidelines and encompass the goals of the John D. Grubb & Louise G. Sumner Fund for Monroe County. The goals of this program are to encourage creative use of community resources which contribute to the quality of life for Monroe County citizens. It also strives to benefit the economic, social and cultural well-being for all residents and communities of Monroe County.

John D. Grubb and his sister Louise had a great desire to help secure advanced educational opportunities for students and leave a philanthropic legacy dedicated to improving the lives of residents in Monroe County. Through a gift from Grubb and his sister, the Fund was established as a permanent charitable endowment for Monroe County, consisting of a scholarship program and a general grantmaking program.

As an Affiliate Fund of ETF, the Fund for Monroe County has supported a variety of projects throughout the county. Since its inception in 1998, the Fund for Monroe County has awarded over $413,000 in grants to organizations that meet the requirements and fulfill the goals of the fund.

East Tennessee Foundation, established in 1986, is a regional community foundation serving 25 counties in East Tennessee. The Foundation serves East Tennessee by building endowments, providing services to donors and making grants to programs and projects that benefit this region and its people. The Foundation has 13 affiliate funds, including the John D. Grubb & Louise G. Sumner Fund for Monroe County.
